The book 'Sail' around the world in 80 pages' covers many interesting facts of the great discovery voyages as well as some in depth information about our Oceans. With topics as diverse as "Who discovered America?" (it was not Columbus, that is for sure), "Whaling in the Azores", Utopia, the chronometer of James Harrison and Napoleon at Saint Helena or: slavery, pollution of the oceans and overfishing.

The idea was born on 2 long sailing trips on the Atlantic Oceaan, first voyage from Simonstown (SA) round Cape of Good Hope, via Namibia to Fortaleza in Brazil and the second trip from Sint Maarten (Caribean) via Bermuda and the Azores to Europe.



A continuous book of 80 pages in a harmonica form, meaning you get 80 full-colour front pages and 80 reverses with drawings, etchings and info-graphics.

It is interactive, all images in the book have numbers which, with the correct webaddress, will send you to a large archive (resources.html) on the internet with much more information.

It is handbound in a piece of sail from sy-GEMINI, the sailing boat with which the voyages were made.

This book is published to raise money for an upcoming exhibition of art photography, travelling the world.

EXHIBITIONS on 'Peru'

3 small frames (approx. 20x25 cm. each) with images (photographs) and objects (from religious and tourism sources) mounted together as 3-dimensional art objects.

The subjects of the triptych are (from left to right):
1. -belief and superstition, the exploiting of the mummies (the past), tourism as a pillar of culture.
2. -about life, surviving and dying.
3. -the reprehensible role of Inquisition and about the Nasca-lines (straight lines, miles-long, in the desert from an unknown origin.

from the same images large prints were made on fabric and displayed (together with the small frames) at various exhibition locations in the Netherlands and in Belgium).

Members of the Zeeuwse Kunstkring are allowed to exhibit their art in the huge windows of the ´Loggia's´, amidst the historical buildings on the Abdijplein in Middelburg.
From 4 till 18th of July 2011 the artist was Robert Schilder. The work that on show, was a triptych on PERU.
consisting of:
3 large works printed on the semi-transparent synthetic fabric of 200x150cm. are interpretations of other work which is on show at the same time, but of much smaller dimensions, in the Grote Kerk in Veere (during the summer exhibition of the Zeeuwse Kunstkring)

Robert Schilder is, apart from being a contemporary artist, organiser of various events on art and culture in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, such as the Kunstroute and the UITmarkt (presentation of cultural events for the coming year) in Sluis.

TRAVEL -BELGIUM 'Ostend'

Ostend is a place of nostalgia. A city on the coast of Belgium which still has the atmosphere of 'fin-de-siécle' of late 1800.

It's a two-in-one picture really, a reflection in the glass of the Kursaal on the Boulevard and an old man in the doorway of his shop.

TRAVEL Macao -'chinese funeral money'

Of course, as a bystander one should show respect to customs in other countries. But this funeral money, which is to be burnt by relatives on certain days to remember the deceased, is very beautiful and reflects a tradition of many centuries. It comes from Macao.

"Mourning periods may last anywhere from three weeks to give years depending on the family member. The family will continue to pray, especially on the 49th and 100th day after death, and at each prayer they will burn effigies including things they believe their loved one needs". TRAVEL: BANARAS -Children I

When you are born in Banaras, you are part of a history and intrinsic art and culture of more than 3000 years old. And it must be great to grow up in a such a city with freedom to play in the numerous alleys with stories on every doorstep, the hundreds of temples and on the ghats, the embankments to the river Ganges. Yet it will be very difficult to escape from this tradition and culture when you grow older.

TRAVEL -Poland: 'Grabarka'

(in addition to my last post about Jay)
Thinking about babies ..

A few years ago I was in Poland with Wiestaw Zielinski. We met a Polish artist who had a newborn son. He literally let the whole world know that he had a son: he wrote to the president, the Pope, everyone he could think of to let them know he had a son. And many answered, he got letters from all around the world. Isn't that great?


Here is a picture I took while in Poland, of the Holy Mount Grabarka. People go there to worship, many go around the church on their knees!
